Top Dog Breeds: The Shih Tzu
Learn all about what makes the Shih Tzu one of the most popular dog breeds.
The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy dog, abundantly covered in soft hair, with a distinctively arrogant carriage. An intelligent, active and very alert breed, the Shih Tzu excels as a watchdog. A happy and hardy little fellow, the Shih Tzu is lively and playful, yet gentle and affectionate. This friendly character makes an excellent companion and family dog.
Shih Tzu Breed Story
The date of origin of the breed is unknown, but there is evidence of its existence from documents and paintings dating from 624 A.D. At this time, small shaggy dogs thought to be ancestors of the Shih Tzu were used as companions and watchdogs to alert the larger guard dogs. The small ""lion"" dogs are thought to have been kept in monasteries throughout Tibet.
