Learn all about what makes the West Highland White Terrier one of the most popular dog breeds.
The West Highland White Terrier, or more affectionately known as the “Westie,” is compact in size and houses a powerful robust physique. Matched with his spirited and independent nature, the Westie is a determined hunter in the field. The West Highland White Terrier also makes an excellent companion. The Westie is playful, devoted to his family, self-reliant and very friendly.
Terriers were originally bred, mainly in the British Isles, during the Middle Ages for hunting smaller rodent and vermin such as rabbits and rats, foxes, badgers and otters. They were expected to hunt above and below ground. Brave and tough, the West Highland Terrier was considered intelligent, trainable and independent enough to work out of sight and sound of their masters. Their small heads, powerful jaws and short muscular legs meant they were perfectly adept at digging out and vanquishing prey.
